What is a Fixed Gear Bike?

Unlike most modern bikes that have gears, fixed gear bikes have one gear. The hub of the rear wheel is directly connected to the rear sprocket, making the bike single-speed. There is only one gear ratio and no derailleurs to throw the chain off. It is a modern bike simplified to its very essence.
