Why do some fixed gear riders not use brakes?

Since it takes more energy and effort to stop a fixed gear bicycle than a conventional modern bike many fixie enthusiasts have said, “why stop at all? we don’t like to slow down. The point of riding a bike is to be free and get where you are going not to stop, so let’s find a way to keep going.”

Fixed gear bikes also have a history with brazen riding style of the 80′s bike messenger who needed to get where they were going quickly and in their case slowing down or stopping was costing them money. So many messengers started to take off their brakes all together so they could learn how to flow into traffic rather stop and wait for it. There is still a considerable amount of fixie enthusiasts that use no breaks, but there are many options with breaks today.
